Approved Swimsuits for 2010

Dear Clubs & Coaches:

This correspondence will provide you with some important information related to swimsuits for the 2010 USA Swimming Championship meets. These competitions include:

  • Aug. 3-7 ConocoPhillips/USA Swimming National Championships
  • Aug. 9-13 Speedo Junior National Championships
  • Aug. 18-22 Mutual of Omaha Pan Pacific Championships
  • Dec. 2-4 AT&T Short Course National Championships
  • Dec. 9-11 Speedo Short Course Junior National Championships

At all of these meets, in accordance with FINA rules, all swimwear worn in competition must be on the FINA list of approved swimsuits and must have the appropriate FINA labeling on the outside of the swimwear.

In preparation for implementing this, USA Swimming sent a letter to swimsuit manufacturers in late February 2010 alerting them to the fact that all suits must be labeled. It is our understanding that most suits being produced today do have the appropriate labeling. While it is the responsibility of the manufacturer to have the correct labeling on the swimsuits, all athletes and coaches need to know that FINA rules require that the suit worn must be labeled correctly.

If any of your athletes come to any of these championship meets without the FINA-approval labeling on the swimsuits, they will only be permitted to be worn after an inspection of the suit in the last call room. To avoid this last-minute stress, please make sure you arrive at the meet(s) with the labeling already on the competition suits. Specific procedures for suit inspection at these meets will be provided during the general meeting prior to the meet.

Thank you for your attention to this matter. If you have any questions, please contact either of us at bruce@strattoncpa.com or munger@usaswimming.org.
